JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police have dispelled claims that 13 people were killed in areas known for gang violence this week.

This follows social media posts alleging that 13 people were killed in the areas of Westbury and Eldorado Park.

Police spokesperson Brenda Muridili said the posts were misleading.

"One of the most wanted gang-affiliated suspects, Morgan John aka Big John was arrested on Thursday for murder and he appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Friday, 21 June 2024.

"He has been remanded in custody and he will appear in court again on 29 June 2024. There are extra deployments in place to augment members from anti-gang and the local stations’ day-to-day policing."

Muridili said the anti-gang unit had made inroads in curbing violence plaguing certain communities.
