JOHANNESBURG - Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) commissioner Dr Nomsa Masuku has been arrested by the Hawks for corruption amounting to R1.2 million.
The alleged corruption relates to her time as an employee at Standard Bank, where she headed the company’s corporate social investment programme called "Adopt a School Trust".
Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale said Masuku was entrusted with selecting and giving bursaries to qualifying students in institutions of higher learning.
"Through an intensive probe, the Hawks investigators established that the incumbent flouted the processes of the trust by awarding scholarships to friends and family members through manipulation of documents and without the approval of the Committee, with some of the monies deposited directly into her personal bank account to the tune of R1.2 million."
Masuku made her first appearance on Friday morning at the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court and was released on R20,000 bail.
The matter was postponed to 4 September for further investigations.
