JOHANNESBURG - Eskom said it wants the City of Johannesburg and City Power to repay its full debt of R3.4 billion for defaulting on its electricity account.

The utility said the Johannesburg High Court ordered the metro to pay just over R1 billion of the debt, including interest.

Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena said City Power had been defaulting on payments since October.

"When the matter was heard on 4 June 2024, the total amount owed to Eskom was R3.4 billion. The city, in response to Eskom’s application, brought a counterclaim against Eskom for R3.4 billion, alleging potential overbilling and that as a result, it applied an automatic setoff against the electricity account. The court dismissed the counterclaim by the city with costs and dismissed the automatic setoff claim."
