CAPE TOWN - Plans for a more integrated freight and rail system between countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region were discussed in Cape Town on Thursday.

The Southern African Railways Association (SARA) held a board meeting with rail agencies from various countries in the region to strengthen ties.

Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) CEO Hishaam Emeran, who was on Thursday voted in as the new president of SARA said the honour humbled him.

"The board is tasked with looking at collaboration between the various rail organisations - entities within the SADC region and beyond."

Emeran said an implementation plan was also on the agenda to be discussed at the meeting.

"We are looking at strengthening relationships, strengthening collaboration and integration - both from a passenger as well freight rail point of view."

Emeran said the board would also look at upgrading existing railway systems within the region.
