JOHANNESBURG - Small political parties have not ruled out the possibility of joining the African National Congress (ANC)-led Government of National Unity (GNU) but have weighed in on possible stumbling blocks.
Build One South Africa (BOSA) and Rise Mzansi are yet to officially announce whether they’ll form part of the GNU in the National Assembly.
They joined dozens of people to observe President Cyril Ramaphosa’s inauguration at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Wednesday.
Rise Mzansi leader Songezo Zibi said the political party was still engaging with the ANC and other organisations to consider its role should it form part of the GNU.
He said the party wanted to ensure the unity government had its priorities set out before officially joining the pact.
"I’m sure by the weekend or early next week, we will make our position known. But what South Africans can count on is that we’ll play a very important role in Parliament in order to make sure the South African people are well represented and we’ll get the quality of legislation."
At the same time, BOSA deputy leader Nobantu Hlazo-Webster said the party would soon announce whether or not it would form part of the GNU.
"We want to only join a GNU when we are clear on what the agenda is, the programme of the GNU and how we will participate in that. But other than that, we’ve also been commissioned by the people of South Africa to hold the government to account."
