Chikunga welcomes signing into law of Economic Regulation of Transport Bill
The bill aims to strengthen the economic regulation of transport in the country by establishing a unified framework and policy, which will see an integration of pricing and access to transport facilities across the transport sub-sectors, including ports, rail, road, and aviation.

JOHANNESBURG - Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga has welcomed the signing into law of the Economic Regulation of Transport Bill by the president.
The bill aims to strengthen the economic regulation of transport in the country by establishing a unified framework and policy, which will see an integration of pricing and access to transport facilities across the transport sub-sectors, including ports, rail, road, and aviation.
Subsequently, a Transport Economic Regulator (TER) will be established to, among other functions, oversee pricing, investigate complaints, and allow for a fair and competitive transport industry.
"PRSA [Ports Regulator of South Africa] will form the nucleus of the TER because it already performs economic regulatory functions," said Department of Transport spokesperson Collen Msibi.
Msibi added that a Transport Economic Council will also be established.
"The Transport Economic Council shall serve as an appeal institution on the decisions made by the regulator."
