JOHANNESBURG - African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) president Collen Malatji has criticised some of the country's top elected leaders for sending their children to private schools amid concerns about the poor state of public facilities.

Malatji made the criticism during the commemoration of Youth Day on Sunday.

He believes the move is an indictment on government's commitment to provide quality education at public schools.

"Why do public reps take their kids to private schools when they fought for quality learning and teaching?"

Malatji has called on public servants to lead by example.

"I think as part of the celebration of June 16, we need to encourage public reps and public servants to really support our own public system. Take your kids to the nearest public school, there a lot of public schools around."
