CAPE TOWN - Alan Winde has been elected for a second term as premier of the Western Cape after 26 out of 42 members voted for him.
The African National Congress (ANC)'s candidate, Muhammad Khaled Sayed, received 14 votes and two ballots were spoiled.
Winde's swearing-in as an MPL and his subsequent election as premier happened in a quick and incident-free process of a few hours on Thursday morning.
Winde was elected in a seamless process, with no delays and no debates.
His election followed the swearing-in process of new and old MPLs, who took their oath to serve the public.
Winde thanked the chamber after his election and promised to serve the citizens of the province.
"it is a privilege and also an honour to be able to take this position into the next term on behalf of the citizens of this province."
After the election of the Speaker, Winde will then be officially sworn in as premier before he appoints his Cabinet later on Thursday.
