TSHWANE - Gauteng police say they have made great strides in ridding the provincial service of corruption.

Provincial Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni briefed the media in Tshwane on Thursday on the successes and progress made in prominent cases since he took office, over 100 days ago.

Mthombeni said part of his mission was to ensure that corrupt members were removed from the police service.

The commissioner said that not only were corrupt officials rooted out, they were also discharged.

"So far, 51 members have been arrested for various offenses, including corruption, of which 12 members have been discharged from SAPS."

Mthombeni added that the harsh action taken against SAPS members not only aims to reduce crime but to restore the service to its former glory.

"Five of which was corruption, two for fraud, one for murder and one for rape as we ensure that we restore integrity for the police service."

Mthombeni said although they'd made great progress in many criminal cases over the past 100 days, more work still needed to be done.
