JOHANNESBURG - Outgoing Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan said that the African National Congress (ANC) had never needed to partner with the Democratic Alliance (DA) to convince markets that it was running the country well.

Gordhan weighed in on arguments that partnering with the main opposition was the best option for the ANC in order to appease the markets.

The ANC has settled on a government of national unity (GNU), inviting all parties interested in working with it to the negotiating table.

The political activist made the comments on Politricking with Tshidi Madia, an EWN politics podcast.

His party, the former liberation movement, has been attempting to put together a power-sharing deal following a dismal showing in last month’s general elections.

Gordhan said financial markets recognised how the ANC had governed the country over the last three decades.

"The so-called markets have had no hesitation in dealing with the ANC in terms of the way in which it approaches its fiscal policies, the way it emphasises the importance of development in this country and the prudence with which it manages its finances on the one hand."

And as the first sitting of the seventh Parliament draws closer, Gordhan said he was certain the ANC would prioritise the interests of society.

He also listed some of the values which he believes parties the ANC should work with must adhere to.

"The willingness to recognise the fundamentals: A - we have a constitution in this country, B - we are a constitutional democracy, C - we have democratic institutions in this country."
