CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape will be the first of nine provinces to elect and swear in its premier when Alan Winde starts his second term on Thursday.

Winde also won't waste any time and will announce his new Cabinet right after his swearing-in as premier in his Cape Town office.

Provinces including the Eastern Cape, the North West, and Gauteng have also confirmed that the swearing-in ceremonies will take place on Friday.

Western Cape acting Judge President Patricia Goliath will officially swear in Winde as premier before he takes up another five-year term.

This will come after the swearing-in of members of the provincial legislature, with the Democratic Alliance (DA) expected to nominate Winde.

But it's not clear who parties such as the African National Congress (ANC) will nominate to stand against Winde.

Winde said in a statement that his new Cabinet had been carefully chosen to build on the successes of his first term.

Meanwhile, the ANC said it was yet to conclude its premier selection with provinces where it won a majority, like the Eastern Cape, and was still waiting for direction from Luthuli House on the preferred candidates.
