JOHANNESBURG - The National Freedom Party (NFP) said that the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party should be allowed to govern KwaZulu-Natal as it received the most votes from the elections.
The NFP has emerged as a potential kingmaker in KwaZulu-Natal despite having only one seat in the provincial legislature.
The party said it was willing to work with any party represented in the province except for the Democratic Alliance (DA), which it has conflicting ideologies with.
Despite producing one of the biggest shocks of these elections by dethroning the African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal from the number one spot, the uMkhonto weSizwe Party still faces a possibility of being out of the provincial government.
So far, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is the only party that has publicly stated it is willing to work with the MK.
However, the EFF only has two seats and combined with the MK they would have 39.
In comparison, an ANC, DA and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) coalition has 40.
This leaves the NFP, with its one seat, having the power to decide who governs KwaZulu-Natal.
NFP leader, Canaan Mdletshe, said that the party was leaning towards the MK at this stage.
"Considering the results, it is clear the people of KZN want to be led by the MK Party."
The ANC faces an ethical dilemma in KwaZulu-Natal as the organisation has always believed the party with the most votes should form government.
