KZN govt estimates infrastructure damage to recent devastating storms exceeds R1.3bn

DURBAN - The KwaZulu-Natal government estimates that the damage to infrastructure after last week’s devastating storms exceeds R1.3 billion.
At least five district municipalities in the province were hit with heavy rains and winds on Tuesday.

This resulted in the deaths of 12 people, 7,000 homes being damaged, and thousands of people being displaced.
KwaZulu-Natal Corporate Governance spokesperson Siboniso Mngadi said a number of schools, roads, and other public facilities were also damaged during the havoc.
“Since last Tuesday, when the storms that claimed 12 lives struck several parts of the province, the government, in collaboration with social partners and private donors, has been actively on the ground assisting victims in restoring their lives.
“Today, Wednesday 12 June, the national Department of Human Settlements will deliver the first batch of building material that will benefit about 674 households at eMagwaveni in uThongathi. Donors and NGOs started delivering materials on Tuesday, 11 June, to many other families.”
