CAPE TOWN - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) in the Eastern Cape has arrested two officers based at Walmer Police Station following allegations of murder.
It's alleged that in April last year, a 28-year-old man driving a Volkswagen Polo refused to stop at a roadblock.
A high-speed chase ensued and the police officers attached to the Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) allegedly fired shots at the vehicle until it stopped.
When they opened the car door, the officers found the deceased in the driver's seat with his head on the steering wheel.
The victim was declared dead on the scene.
"The incident was reported to IPID for investigation of death as a result of police action. The two officers were arrested by IPID investigators yesterday and charged with murder. They appeared in the Gqeberha Magistrate's Court and were each released on bail of R1,000. The case was postponed to the 29th of July 2024 for further investigation," said IPID's Phaladi Shuping.
