CAPE TOWN - The developer of an illegal 22-unit apartment building in Oakdale, Bellville has less than three weeks to pay an R1 million penalty for unauthorised building work.
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has upheld the city's municipal planning tribunal's decision to impose the record penalty fine.
The city said that the building's developer ignored the municipality's order to stop the construction of the two-storey building two years ago.
Hill-Lewis said that the structure was built on a plot meant for a single dwelling and encroached on neighbouring properties.
He says the building was also a safety risk for tenants.
"We are sending a clear message that in Cape Town, we are working to build a society based on the rule of law and the fregeunt disregard of the building regulations can not be tolerated. Law is not only for some, it is for all."
