CAPE TOWN - Civil rights organisation, Action Society, is demanding police intervention for child safety.

The call comes after three children were gunned down at a barbershop in Site C, Khayelitsha over the weekend.

Police said that an unknown number of gunmen entered the barbershop on Saturday afternoon and opened fire on customers.

Two children, aged 10 and 12, as well as a 30-year-old man, died on the scene.

Three other children were rushed to hospital, where a four-year-old died of their injuries.

Action Society spokesperson, Kaylynn Palm, said that police were failing to protect children caught in the crossfire of gang violence in the township.

"It is appalling and unacceptable that children are being killed week after week in this country. The lives of these innocent children were cut short, and people are tired of the violence. The community say they are fearful and are left with unanswered questions while police try to track down the killers. These children all had a name, a family and people who loved them."
