JOHANNESBURG - The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) said it had processed a bulk payment of accommodation allowances to private student accommodation landlords.

The latest move forms part of the scheme's interventions intended to provide relief to the landlords following months of delayed payments by NSFAS.

The financial aid scheme was recently embroiled in scandals relating to corruption and maladministration.

The scheme is currently under the leadership of administrator, Freeman Nomvalo, after Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande dissolved the scheme's board earlier this year.

Spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi said the first bulk payment was made at the end of May with the second expected mid-month.

"Furthermore, the administrator reiterates his call to all TVET students who still do not have bank accounts to open bank accounts with banks of their own choice and submit their bank accounts on the NSFAS established portal to avoid delays in the payment of their allowances."
