CAPE TOWN - The man convicted of raping and killing 19-year-old University of Cape Town (UCT) student, Uyinene Mrwetyana, in 2019, could soon face sentencing for another crime, an alleged attempted rape in 2014.
Luyanda Botha appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Friday, where he's on trial for the attempted rape of a 21-year-old woman at a nursing college in Athlone.
Botha made headlines in 2019 when he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the rape and murder of Mrwetyana.
National Prosecuting Authority(NPA) spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, said that the trial was underway.
"The victim has testified and we had two witnesses, including the investigating officer and a young man who was a student at that facility."
Ntabazalila said that the victim laid a complaint after the incident in 2014, but after attending initial court proceedings, she disappeared and the matter was then struck from the roll.
He said that the victim then went to follow up on her case and it was back on the roll.
Two more witnesses are set to testify when the matter is back in court on 14 June.
