City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the attack was unwarranted and hindered the entity's ability to provide services.

"We are hoping that the rest of those criminals who basically did this who stole our cables and our joints and even our toolboxes are arrested and brought to book, and taught a lesson that municipal workers government workers are not to be attacked, because they’re there to provide services to residence that need it."

Meanwhile, City Power has continued with its revenue collection drive through disconnecting indebted businesses and residences.

On Thursday, the power utility led a revenue collection drive at the Reuven Service Delivery Centre, which owes more than R1 billion in unpaid electricity bills.

The utility said its ongoing initiative not only addressed the ongoing debt in the city, but also dealt with excessive electricity consumption particularly during winter, as the system remained under pressure.

City Power said it’s still sitting with around R10 billion in customer debt.
