CAPE TOWN - The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape wants chairperson Oscar Mabuyane to continue as premier, but he will still have to slug it out with two other candidates.
The ANC’s extended Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) in the province joined other provincial structures when they selected people they believe should be premier in provinces controlled by the ANC after the elections.
The process has also seen more women than men nominated as premier candidates despite getting fewer nominations.
Those nominated by provincial structures will know soon whether their preferred candidates will be made premier in provinces like the Eastern cape, Gauteng and Limpopo.
The party’s NEC met on Thursday, with the premier candidates featuring on the agenda.

The PEC said Nomakhosazana Meth was part of the initial nomination in the same process which was previously taken, but had to be omitted after she was nominated for the national-to-national list.
On national coalition talks, the Eastern Cape PEC said it recognises the sensitivity with which they should be treated as the outcomes will impact on the future of our country.
