JOHANNESBURG - The South African Union of Students (SAUS) said while the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is aligned to its interests, it's concerned the red berets will cause instability in the national government.
With the African National Congress (ANC) having lost its majority, the seventh democratic administration will have to be a coalition government.

The union has urged the next government to not reverse the gains made for students in the previous administrations.
In its election manifesto, the EFF wants to increase the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) budget, expand free tertiary education to more students, and introduce a monthly stipend for unemployed graduates.
Despite this, SAUS national spokesperson Asive Dlanjwa said the EFF’s behaviour in local government coalitions was concerning.
“The only threat is the sustainability of that coalition agreement as it pertains to them but in terms of their policies and their positions on education, it is clear we would not have a problem in terms of the cutting of the budget of the NSFAS and any other social welfare programmes that are set to alleviate the suffering of the poor and working class.”
