Police arrest man in Durbanville for possession of abalone worth R1.5m

CAPE TOWN - Police have arrested a man in Durbanville for the possession of abalone worth R1.5 million.
 
Officers attached to the Cape Town K9 unit were busy with patrols on Monday when they responded to information about a Chevrolet bakkie that was transporting abalone to an address in the area.
 
"Members of the South African Police Service remain resolute in their quest to protect our living marine resources from being depleted through the arrests of suspects and the subsequent seizure of abalone,” said the police's Joseph Swartbooi.

“The members spotted the vehicle parked in Cobble Walk at around 12:50. They approached the vehicle and ensued with a search, which resulted in the recovery of 6,332 units of abalone."
 
The suspect will appear in the Bellville Magistrate's Court once charged.
