CAPE TOWN - Gift of the Givers teams continue to keep a close eye on the Eastern Cape, where several areas have been hit hard by inclement weather conditions.

Seven people have died in Nelson Mandela Bay, while provincial authorities confirmed that at least 10 people lost their lives in four separate car accidents since the storms started this past weekend.

The humanitarian aid group's Corene Conradie said that two deaths had been reported in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality.

"In BCM, the water has subsided, the sun's been out for a few minutes and we are expecting about 80% to 90% of rain to fall as of 1pm today."

Conradie said that a number of families had been forced to leave their homes.

"Many people have been evacuated and are staying in temporary structures and we are monitoring the situation very closely with disaster management and the local municipality as the soil is already wet, about 250mm have been measured since last week Friday."
