CAPE TOWN - Former Western Cape premier and Freedom Front Plus member of the provincial legislature, Peter Marais, said that he would be hanging up his political gloves now that the election was done.
Marais said that he was handing over the baton to his son, Grant Marais, who was on the ballot as the party's second candidate in the province.
Peter Marais was in a jovial mood at the Western Cape results operations centre, where he was seen joking with other politicians and sharing memories about his time as premier of the province.
Marais served as Cape Town's new unicity mayor in 2000 but was dismissed in 2001 before soon being appointed as premier of the province until 2002.
After a 40-year career in politics, Marais said that he was ready to retire.
"I've decided to step out of politics now. I've been there now since 1974. My son is now a metro councillor and he is on the ballot paper, so I think he will make it, he will be in."
The party currently has just over 25,000 votes with a liitle more than 1.5% of the total votes in the province.
