JOHANNESBURG - The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), which has been dubbed the kingmakers of the next government, said it was going into coalition talks to be in power and not opposition.

The IFP was one of the few established parties not negatively impacted by the emergence of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party. Instead, the party marginally grew its support in KwaZulu-Natal and nationally.

The lack of an outright winner in both those houses has left them hung.

IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa said at this stage, there was no party they had ruled out working with.

"We go into these coalition [talks] humbled by the support given to the IFP by the people of South Africa and we want to be as responsible as possible in taking our country forward."
