CAPE TOWN - The African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape is licking its wounds after admitting to a disappointing showing in the provincial elections.

The province's main opposition party lost almost 10% of its votes in the province compared to the last elections in 2019.

ANC provincial spokesperson Khalid Sayed said the party is forced to go back to the drawing board.

"We accept the result, we accept the outcome, we are disappointed. We are most certainly disappointed in the result but having said that, this is an opportunity for us to critically reflect and to analyse where things went wrong."

PA provincial secretary Cheslyn Steenberg said the party was grateful for the support it garnered in the Western Cape.

"We can assure all residents of the Western Cape and the voters that entrusted us with this vote that we will make sure that our offering, that we have offered to you during the campaign will still be realised."

With coalition talks set to continue in the coming days, both the ANC and PA have promised to be robust opposition to the Democratic Alliance in the province.
