JOHANNESBURG - Political parties have moved beyond looking at the number of votes cast in their favour, and are now attempting to configure what government in the seventh administration should look like.

This as coalition talks take centre stage, with parties only being granted 14 days to form a government once the elections have been declared.

The African National Congress (ANC) looks set to lose control in several provinces, with it just missing the mark in the Northern Cape and well on its way out of office in Gauteng and in KwaZulu-Natal.

ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa might find himself having yet another Nelson Mandela moment, possibly overseeing a government of national unity.

Thirty years ago, Madiba was the head of state of a government made up of different political parties.

And while some push for a grand coalition that will include the Democratic Alliance, others want the ANC to look at the uMkhonto weSizwe party and the Economic Freedom Fighters, arguing that these two are simply variations of the ANC.

Independent analyst Ralph Mathekga considers what working with the DA means:

“It’s not far-fetched. I mean the DA has already made a bold and very interesting move that it’s willing to work with the ANC, if that means the ANC can be saved, the way in which the DA sees it.”

As of Saturday morning, 15 million votes had been counted, with a bell ringing once in a while indicating that there’s an update and that the country is edging closer to concluding the 2024 elections.
