CAPE TOWN - It’s been a muted end to the capture of results in the Western Cape, without the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) top brass coming out in their numbers as has always been customary to acknowledge their victory.

One hundred percent of votes in the province were finally captured just after 5PM, and the results centre has now officially been shut down.

Tensions flared on Saturday night after objections were raised by at least 17 parties over the alleged incorrect capturing of votes.

These will now be addressed by the national electoral office.

Western Cape provincial head Michael Hendrickse said despite the challenges raised by political parties, there were no serious transgressions of the code of conduct.

He again apologised to Western Cape voters for a less-than-ideal voting experience.

"I know we didn’t always deliver a perfect election to you, and for many of you, your experience wasn’t what we deserved to give you. And for that, I will again apologise to you all and your families in that regard."

He said should the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC uphold any of the complaints it’s received, a recount of the provincial votes may be necessary before the result is finalised.

"It’s the responsibility of our CEO and our commissioner in Tshwane to declare the final results of this election."

However, given the DA’s landslide victory of over a million votes, any additional votes allocated to other parties are unlikely to have a material effect on the result in this province.
