CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape looks set to be the next province after the Northern Cape to conclude the capture of votes.

Ninety percent of the ballots are now audited and in the system.

As it currently stands, the Democratic Alliance (DA) is certain of a return to government in the province, while the African National Congress (ANC) once again takes a major knock.

With 55% of the vote, the DA is on the right path to extend its lead in the province to 20 years.

But the ANC will be licking their wounds, with only 18% of the vote.

This looks set to be its worst performance since losing the province to the DA in 2009.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is also looking dejected.

After an altercation with the Electoral Commission over an alleged incorrect capturing of votes, they are about to give up their third-place position in the province to the Patriotic Alliance (PA).

The PA's first foray in a provincial election appears to be paying off and with 8.7% of the vote, it’s on track to make its debut in the legislature.

For Zackie Achmat, the province’s only independent candidate who’s hoping to enter the National Assembly, the goal is still a long way off.
