EAST LONDON - The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) in the Eastern Cape said that vote counting in the province should be finished by Friday night.

The commission is also dealing with objections from the Democratic Alliance (DA) in places like Nelson Mandela Bay.

The African National Congress (ANC) currently has 65% of the vote, followed by the DA with 12% and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) with just under 10%.

The provincial IEC said that it's at the business end of its counting process and was just resolving a few issues related to objections lodged by the DA at some voting stations in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Eastern Cape electoral officer, Kayakazi Magudumana, said that the allegations were that there were a lot of discrepancies between what’s reflected on the results slips and what’s actually inside the ballot box.

But she said that provinces did not deal with objections from parties and would wait for a directive from the national office on how to proceed.

Once that happens, it will then be up to the national office to decide how to proceed with the investigation or if there's any merit in the complaint.

"So that is where we are as a province and we are hoping that we will be done with anything that has to do with results tonight at 10."

Magudumana said they had captured 89.9% of the provincial ballot by 3pm and 89.7% of the regional ballot.
