CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said that he was pleased that council finally approved the city's budget on Friday.

He said that this meant that the city's infrastructure spend of R39.5 billion over the next three years could go ahead.

The mayor added that lower-income households would directly benefit from R9 billion of the city's R12 billion infrastructure spend.

Hill-Lewis also estimates that the budget will help create 130,000 construction-related jobs over the next three years.

"My hope is that when people look back at this time in Cape Town, they will see the efforts made for positive change, at the heart of our national economy, and at the forefront of a better future for families."
