JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) said it’s mulling legal action against the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) after the elections results dashboard crashed earlier on Friday.

The leaderboard at all result operation centres across the country malfunctioned for almost two hours.

The IEC said it was still investigating the cause of the glitch.

In a game of numbers, it’s being seen that as counting continues, every vote matters.

What the technical glitch has done is cause some panic and concern among party leaders who believe votes went missing during the blackout of results.

DA leader John Steenhuisen, on the floor of the national Results Operations Centre in Midrand, had this to say: “I think it’s prejudiced political parties. We are busy calculating because our legal team is looking at whether we may take action against the IEC for damages because we’ve calculated almost a 4-percentage point that their inefficiencies have possibly shaved off our ultimate result and the results of other parties as well.”

Although the system is up and running again, the IEC has been at pains to reiterate that the glitch didn’t affect the numbers.
