CAPE TOWN - Many voters also had to brave the threat of crime, particularly in Cape Town's gang-ridden suburbs.
There has been an apparent uptick in gun violence in several communities over the past few days.
In Langa, gunmen opened fire on a woman and a man in their fifties, killing them instantly.
A 19-year-old man was shot dead in front of his house in Manenberg as voting got underway on Wednesday while another gang-related shooting was reported in the same area where a 35-year-old man was killed.
In Heinz Park, a 57-year-old woman died after apparently being caught in the crossfire during gang violence, while in nearby Samora Machel, sporadic shooting incidents were reported, prompting the deployment of the Anti-Gang Unit.
They arrested two suspects for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
