It's understood that both parties were leading election campaigns at the informal settlement when the violent scuffle ensued.

Former EFF provincial leader Jossey Buthane, who has now rejoined the ANC, was arrested and charged with attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Despite her child being shot during an unfortunate act of political intolerance, Oratiloe Lebaka woke up on Wednesday morning hoping to cast her ballot.

But when she got to her local voting station, she was told by the IEC’s (Electoral Commission of South Africa) presiding officers that her name didn't appear on the system.

She has told Eyewitness News that she was saddened by not being able to participate in shaping the country’s future.

"I really wanted to vote. It’s just that they couldn't find my name. I never miss an election so it's an unusual feeling to stay home while others vote."

Meanwhile, it's relatively calm at Juju Valley on Wednesday evening, with community members going on about their lives.

There’s no movement at their local voting station it seems tensions between the EFF and ANC are dying down.
