IN PICS: A day at the polls - South Africans make their mark in the 2024 elections
Only a handful of the over 23,000 voting stations reported issues as millions of South Africans queued, some for many hours, to cast their votes. Here is a snapshot of the day.

JOHANNESBURG - Millions of registered voters queued to make their mark in the 2024 elections, the collective experience of which has been met with mixed results.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) said on Wednesday only a handful of the over 23,000 voting stations reported issues, including a lack of ballots and system glitches. But the IEC paid special attention to the affected areas.
IEC deputy CEO Masego Sheburi said that although avoidable and disappointing, the issues that affected some voting stations served as a reminder that the commission could do more.
The country now waits while results are collated.
