Ten surveillance choppers have been deployed in Gauteng as an additional security measure.

The provincial police commissioner Tommy Mthombeni said more resources have been allocated to over 100 stations that have been identified as high-risk areas.

At the same time, NATJOINTS chairperson Tebello Mosikili said police are also monitoring online platforms for any threats.

Mosikili reminded residents that protesting next to voting stations is illegal.

“Action will be taken against people who take picketing to the voting stations. It’s against the Electoral Act to picket within 100 metres of a voting station and it’s a contravention. It is prohibited.”

Police have also encouraged voters to head to the polls early to prevent being victims of crime in the evening.
