CAPE TOWN - Athlone residents are making there way to voting stations in the community on Wednesday despite the threat of ongoing gang violence in the area.

A steady stream of people are lining up outside the Rylands Primary School hall to cast their votes.

We spoke to first-time voter Farzeen Latief, who told us she's excited to be voting on Wednesday because a change is needed in the country.

The Athlone area has been riddled with gang violence recently, as shootings persist in the surrounding community.

Senior citizen Shamsheer Singh said that there'd been one shooting a day in the area for the past month.

He hopes his vote will count towards creating more visible policing in the Athlone area.
