CAPE TOWN - Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen and Western Cape Premier Alan Winde say the IEC is ready for the national elections on Wednesday after doing oversight visits at polling stations in Gauteng and the Western Cape.

Steenhuisen and Winde joined Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis in Mitchells Plain on Tuesday after visiting other polling stations in the province.

Steenhuisen said that special voting was running smoothly after visiting a number of voting stations in Gauteng on Monday and some in the Western Cape on Tuesday.

"There's been no complaints that I've received from the Western Cape or Gauteng - it seems there's been issues in the Eastern Cape and I hope it's a good portent for what we're going to see tomorrow."

Winde, who visted voting stations on the West Coast on Monday, heaped praise on IEC provincial head, Michael Hendrickse.

"A couple of issues yesterday with longer queues but very quickly sorted out, I mean today, much better, you can see it and obviously these two days are preparedness, but I think Mr Hendrickse and his team have done a good job here in the province."

Both Steenhuisen and Winde said they were looking forward to a good day of voting on Wednesday.
