JOHANNESBURG - Pikitup says it’s made significant progress in clearing accumulated trash in some parts of Johannesburg.

This follows two weeks of disruptions to waste collection as a result of a casual workers' strike.

The workers, whose contracts will end soon, are demanding jobs from the waste collecting company.

Pikitup  urged residents in areas affected by waste collection disruptions to stay patient, as it worked to clear the backlog.

It said it was unclear when things would return to normal, as it was unsure whether the two-week protest would flare up this week.

Spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi said work to clean the streets of Johannesburg was ongoing.

"We are appealing with residents to bear with us, we are doing everything that is possible to try and clear the backlog."

Mkhwanazi has assured residents that all 12 of its depots are now fully operational.
