MK's Van Rooyen vows law enforcement will deal with Phala Phala matter when it comes into power

JOHANNESBURG - Former finance minister, Des van Rooyen, has lambasted law enforcement authorities for failing to hold President Cyril Ramaphosa to account for his Phala Phala scandal.
 
Van Rooyen left the African National Congress (ANC) to join former President Jacob Zuma's uMkhonto weSizwe Party earlier this year.
 
With special voting underway, the former finance minister marked the ballot paper at his hometown in Khutsong on Monday afternoon.
 
After many years of waving the ANC flag, Van Rooyen has voted for the MK Party.
 
"We are urging South Africans to support uMkhonto weSizwe because this is the only party, even up to now, that hasn’t received a cent from these white monopoly capital."

Van Rooyen, who served on Zuma's Cabinet for only three days, insists the ANC has turned against its values.
 
"You must take keen interest in how the Phala Phala saga is being handled. And rest assured, when we get in power, we expect law enforcement to deal with that matter thoroughly."
 
In 2021, President Cyril Ramaphosa told the Zondo Commission that he was on the verge of resigning from public office when Van Rooyen was appointed as the finance minister.
 
The commission further found that Van Rooyen was elevated to the position through the influence of the Gupta family.
