Police spokesperson, Brenda Muridili, said the pair was killed during a fight with African National Congress (ANC) members.
Mkhwanazi's family said that the 32-year-old was never really interested in politics.
All he cared about was soccer, his fiancé and their two-year-old son.
His aunt, Busisiwe Mkhwanazi, said that he only joined the MK Party because of the elections.
Busisiwe said they never knew politics would result in his death.
"They were fighting over the T-shirts of the ANC and MK. You are fighting and killing a person in the township over a T-shirt, while Zuma and Ramaphosa sit comfortably at their homes. What do you get for killing someone for wearing an MK T-shirt?"
Police said that one person was arrested and charged with double murder.
