CAPE TOWN - The University of Cape Town (UCT)’s student representative council (SRC) says the incoming vice-chancellor (VC) should prioritise the issue of financial exclusion of students at the institution.

Professor Mosa Moshabela was announced as the new VC on Friday, effective from October.

The university has seen numerous student protests in the past few years, particularly over student finances.

UCT SRC president Hlamulo Khorommbi said they need a long-term solution to their problems.

"What we've realised for the past years has come with these little short-term solutions, coming in the beginning of the year and saying ‘we'll just lift fee blocks’ but don't lift it.

“This clearly indicates that there's a need for a serious look into what could be a long-term solution with the issue of fee blocks and the issue of accommodation."
