Small businesses in the country face various challenges, including a stagnant economy, load shedding and a lack of financial support.
Johannesburg is home to tens of thousands of small businesses contributing significantly to the economy.
However, a recent study by Brand Africa revealed that 64% of Africans believe in Africa, but only 14% are loyal to African brands.
Local resident Danny Costello said it’s important to empower African entrepreneurs.
“We have so many entrepreneurs in this country, and I do think we need to support them.”
Moses Mosiba, a textile worker in the city centre, said too many raw materials are exiting the country.
“We’re not doing enough, Our governments are not doing enough so that we make brands in Africa that are affordable.”
With celebrations of Africa Day continuing, former President Thabo Mbeki is set to host his annual Africa Day lecture in Guinea on Saturday afternoon.
