CAPE TOWN - The University of Cape Town (UCT) announced Professor Mosa Moshabela as its new vice-chancellor (VC), effective from 1 October.
He takes over the reins from Professor Daya Reddy, who has been acting in the position since March 2023.
The position has been vacant since Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng took early retirement that same month.
UCT council chairperson, Norman Arendse, said they believed they had found the right candidate to lead the institution.
“It struck me, personally, when he applied for the first time – I think it would’ve been in December or January – I thought, ‘this is the right candidate’. Obviously, we had to go through all the procedures. [Moshabela] is someone of high caliber and is quite appropriate for UCT to maintain its position as the premier university in Africa.”
