CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis will be in unfamiliar territory on Thursday when he takes the Democratic Alliance (DA)'s campaign to the African National Congress (ANC)-run Buffalo City Metro.

Hill-Lewis is expected to address supporters and would-be voters in the second Eastern Cape metro, after being invited by his provincial counterparts.

The visit also shows a new trend where provincial and local leaders from both the DA and the ANC going campaigning in other provinces.

The Cape Town mayor heads to the Eastern Cape not too long after the ANC's Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane was in the Western Cape to garner support.

But Hill-Lewis said that his trip to the Eastern Cape town of East London had nothing to do with the ANC's own recent visit.

"As a response to Oscar Mabuyane being here but I'm afraid it's not as exciting as that. The DA colleagues in BCM invited me to campaign for a couple of days and I'm answering that invitation."

Hill-Lewis said that next week’s polls were more about what direction the country wanted to take and that also applied to the Eastern Cape, an ANC stronghold.

"So, the fundamental choice next Wednesday is not a choice between political parties, it's a choice of direction for the future of our country and for the Eastern Cape."

Friday will also see DA leader John Steenhuisen leading a final rally in the province at the DA-led Kouga Municipality in Humansdorp.
