CAPE TOWN - With just under a week to go before South Africans head to the elections on 29 May, Western Cape has identified 49 polling stations as high risk.

The figure was announced by provincial Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile at a law enforcement parade in Belhar, Cape Town, on Thursday.

There are 1,572 voting stations in the province, and Patekile said 475 of those have been identified as medium risk.

Patekile said at least six police officers would be stationed at each of the high-risk voting stations.

However, Patekile would not reveal the locations of the high-risk polling stations.

"They're right across the province, not in one particular area. It may be anywhere, and we mustn't assume that it will only be in the Cape Flats, no."

Patekile said a large contingent of police officers would be out in full force until the voting process is complete.
