CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town has welcomed the approval of the remote work visa proposal by Department of Home Affairs.

Home Affairs has refiled significant changes to its work permit legislation, allowing the creation of a nomad visa for remote workers.

The city has been advocating for the department to amend its visa regulations to include remote work visa, which will help in keeping and attracting more visitors into the country.

The changes were gazetted on Tuesday, and became law after a previous withdrawal due to procedural lapses in public commentary periods.

The new visa aims to attract remote workers employed and paid by foreign companies, provided they earn at least R1 million annually.

"I'm delighted to announce a major win. The government gazette now includes a remote worker visa,” said the city's MMC for Economic Growth, James Vos.

“As the City of Cape Town, we have worked hard for this category to be covered in the regulations by making sensible submissions because it will boost our visitor economy and benefit local businesses. It’s simple - more visitors means more jobs."
