Zondi asked to explain Electoral Court's decision on Zuma election candidacy

JOHANNESBURG - Judge Dumisani Zondi has been asked to explain the Electoral Court's decision that has since been overturned by the Constitutional Court in relation to former president, Jacob Zuma.
Zondi, who is a judge in the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) is being interviewed by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for the position of deputy president of the same court.
He is also the chair of the Electoral Court, which had initially ruled that Zuma was eligible to stand as a member of Parliament.
That order was set aside by the apex court on Monday.
During his interview, Zondi was asked how he got the interpretation of the Constitution so wrong.
"I think what is important is the reasoning that you use to arrive at the outcome. I had thought that the reasoning that I used was the correct reasoning to which the outcome that we had reached. It's unlike a situation where the conclusion that you reach is not based on sound reasoning. That was the question of the interpretation of the statute."
