JOHANNESBURG - The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is set to interview current Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya for the position of Chief Justice on Monday.
This is ahead of Chief Justice Raymond Zondo’s upcoming retirement in August.

President Cyril Ramaphosa put forward Maya as the sole nominee in February.
Before appointing her, though, he has to consult with the JSC.
Then Supreme Court of Appeal President, Maya was the JSC’s pick for the post last time but ultimately, it’s the president’s call and he opted to appoint then Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo instead.
Maya was appointed as Zondo's deputy. Even so, it was never a given that she would succeed Zondo.
And even as the sole nominee this time, she like all other candidates has to subject herself to an interview before the JSC - which will then make a recommendation to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Again, the final call remains the president’s to make. But Ramaphosa backs Maya and so long as she gets the JSC’s vote - again - she certainly appears to be a shoo-in.
