Investigation into George building collapse continues as authorities wrap up rescue operations

JOHANNESBURG - Western Cape Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile said that a team of experienced detectives has been assigned to probe the deaths of 33 victims in the George building tragedy.
An unfinished five-storey apartment block collapsed almost two weeks ago, trapping 62 construction workers on site at the time.
Rescue and recovery operations wrapped up on Friday, with all workers now accounted for.
Two bodies retrieved from the rubble are yet to be identified. Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said that a provincial government probe in full swing.
"This was a devastating tragedy, and we need to understand what happened, what steps need to be taken to ensure that we do whatever is necessary so that this will never happen again. But also, that we get to hold those responsible to account."
